Gophers WR Smith dismissed from team
Minnesota wide receiver Brian Smith has been dismissed from the team, Gophers head coach Tracy Claeys said on his radio show Tuesday.
Claeys said Smith, a junior, had violated unspecified team rules.
After not playing in his first two years at Minnesota, the 6-foot-4 Smith emerged as a reliable target this season. His 17 receptions for 279 yards are both second on the Gophers.
Smith's best game was in a 29-26 loss at Penn State, grabbing seven catches for 101 yards, although he had only four receptions since then. Smith scored his lone touchdown vs. Indiana State.
Drew Wolitarsky leads Minnesota in receptions with 40. Running back Rodney Smith and freshman wide receiver Tyler Johnson have 13 while tight end Nate Wozniak has 10. Sophomore wideout Rashad Still, who has five catches, could now be in line for more looks.
