Gophers' McNeil charged with domestic assault

MINNEAPOLIS -- Gophers sophomore guard Daquein McNeil has been suspended from all team activities pending an investigation into a possible domestic assault, the university announced Tuesday in a release.

According to a Hennepin County police report, McNeil is being held in jail without bail. He was charged with domestic assault and was booked at 3 p.m. Monday, the report states.

"We are currently gathering information and cooperating with the authorities," Minnesota athletic director Norwood Teague said in a statement. "This athletics department values respect and positively impacting the lives of others and will not tolerate any form of domestic assault from its staff or student-athletes."

McNeil, a sophomore from Baltimore, was lauded by head coach Richard Pitino as the Gophers' most improved player this offseason. In Minnesota's first four games, McNeil averaged 3.3 points and 2.5 assists in 18.8 minutes. As a freshman he scored just 1.6 points per game while only seeing 9.6 minutes a game.

The Gophers play in the NIT Season Tip-Off in New York this week, beginning with a game Wednesday against St. John's.
