Gomez aborts comeback after one race

Eclipse Award-winning jockey Garrett Gomez returned to ride Friday after missing two months with a broken left heel but had to abandon his comeback after one race because of pain.

Gomez finished fifth in the third race at Santa Anita and was limping noticeably after he dismounted. He says he was in too much pain to ride, so he took off his lone remaining mount in the sixth.

Gomez also took off all mounts on Saturday.

He underwent surgery to insert several screws and a plate in his heel after breaking it in several places in a paddock mishap on Jan. 8.

Gomez says he might wait another week before trying to ride again.
