Goldschmidt makes D-backs' history by hitting into triple-play

National League MVP candidate Paul Goldschmidt made Arizona Diamondbacks history on Tuesday ... but it's not something he's going to be bragging about.

Goldschmidt became the first Diamondback to hit into a triple play when his ninth-inning line drive in the first game of Tuesday's double-header was snared by Colorado shortstop Jose Reyes. The Diamondbacks had two runners on base -- Ender Inciarte on second and Phil Gosselin on first -- and both were running on the pitch.

Reyes relayed to second baseman D.J. LeMahieu to double up Inciarte, and LeMahieu then lobbed the ball to first baseman Ben Paulsen to easily retire Gosselin, who had stopped in his tracks.

It was that kind of day for Goldschmidt, who was 1 for 5 with two strikeouts and six runners left on base in Arizona's 6-4 victory.

It was the fourth triple play turned by the Rockies in their history, the fourth of the 2015 season, and the 702nd known triple play recorded in baseball history, according to the Society of American Baseball Research. The Diamondbacks have registered two triple plays on defense, most recently on May 4, 2009, against the Dodgers.
