Goldencents wins Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile

Goldencents raced to the lead out of the gate and held to win the $1 million Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile by three lengths.

Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, Goldencents ran the distance in 1:35.12 and paid $9.60, $5 and $4. The 3-year-old colt finished 17th in the Kentucky Derby and fourth in the Preakness this year.

Among Goldencents' ownership group is Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino, who wasn't present.

Golden Ticket returned $6.40 and $4.60.

Brazil-bred Brujo De Olleros was another two lengths back in third and paid $4.60 to show.

Verrazano, the 5-2 favorite, finished fourth.

It was the fourth career Breeders' Cup win for both trainer Doug O'Neill and Bejarano, and their first since 2007.
