Giancarlo Stanton named Marlins' nominee for 2014 Hank Aaron Award

Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton was named the club's nominee for the 2014 Hank Aaron Award Monday afternoon.

Since 1999, the honor has gone to the most outstanding offensive performer in each league. A panel of Hall of Fame players led by Aaron, as well as fans, have voted for the award over the past four years. Fans can help decide the winner at MLB.com and the 30 team sites through Oct. 5. The recipients will be announced during the World Series.

Stanton, whose season ended on Sept. 11 when a fastball struck him in the face, hit .288 with 37 home runs and 105 RBI in 145 games. Despite missing the final 17 games, Stanton still became the first Marlins player to lead the NL in home runs. He also tallied the most total bases (299) and highest slugging percentage (.555), and tied for first in extra-base hits (69).

The 24-year-old, who competed at this year's Home Run Derby and made his second All-Star Game, finished second in the NL in RBI, walks (94), on-base percentage (.395) and OPS (.950).

The Hall of Fame panel will include Roberto Alomar, Johnny Bench, Paul Molitor, Eddie Murray, Frank Thomas and Robin Yount. These Hall of Famers combined for 16,956 hits, 8,844 RBI and 2,109 home runs. They were selected by Aaron to offer their opinions while selecting the best offensive performer in each league.
