FSU coach Mike Martin wins 1,800th game

Mike Martin earned his 1,800th win, joining a club of just three Division I baseball coaches, with Florida State's 4-3 win at Wake Forest on Saturday night.

Martin joins Texas' Augie Garrido and Gene Stephenson on that list.

''I think really one day I will look back on this,'' Martin said. ''But right now it's just a number, and I don’t want it to sound likes it’s not important, it is important because we won a ball game. But what's important to me is seeing those young men get to the series (College World Series). That's what excites me more than anything about this job. I want to see those young men get to Omaha.''

The Seminoles (30-8, 16-4 ACC) needed 13 innings and a strong pitching performance from Jameis Winston to do it. Winston (1-0) pitched 4.2 scoreless innings, striking out two and giving up two hits while throwing 44 pitches.

In the top of the 13th, John Sansone led off and was hit by a pitch. He stole second and scored on Danny De La Calle's single to center field.

DJ Stewart went 2 for 6 with an RBI, extending his streak of reaching base to a school-record 59 games.
