FOX Sports North Midweek Stock Report for March 9
Every Wednesday, FOX Sports North takes a look at which athletes' stock is trending up and whose is trending down.
In other words, whose game is on the rise (looking good, Tyus) and who is on the decline this week.
With that in mind, let's take stock of the current sports scene in Minnesota.
Ryan Suter, Wild defenseman
Suter has been a solid offensive contributer throughout his career, but he's been scoring at a healthy clip for the Wild over the last few games. Suter had a goal and an assist in a 6-3 win over the Avalanche last week, before adding assists in wins over Buffalo and Toronto, then scoring again in a loss to St. Louis.
Tyus Jones, Timberwolves guard
The Spurs might have roughed up the Minnesota Timberwolves at Target Center on Tuesday, but rookie Tyus Jones emerged with his best stat-line of the season regardless. Jones scored a season-high 10 points against San Antonio, while adding six assists.
Amanda Kessel, Gophers forward
The dynamic senior has 11 points in 10 games since her mid-season comeback against North Dakota, and she vexed the Fighting Hawks again on Saturday in the semifinals of the WHCA Final Face-Off. Kessel picked up an assist on Sydney Baldwin's power play goal in the first period, before adding an insurance goal in the second period to lead Minnesota to a 2-0 win. She's also been roasting confused Pittsburgh Penguins fans on Twitter, who have somehow mistaken Amanda for her older brother, NHL winger Phil Kessel.
The Timberwolves' starters
Sam Mitchell may have put his young stars on notice following a 116-101 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks last week, but the group responded with enthusiasm in the follow-up. Karl-Anthony Towns, Andrew Wiggins, Zach LaVine and Ricky Rubio combined for 91 points against the Nets, while powering the Timberwolves to a franchise-record field goal percentage of 68.4 in a 132-118 demolition of Brooklyn.
Gophers men's hockey team
The Gophers needed just three points against unranked Michigan State to clinch the Big Ten title, before a Spartans shutout derailed their title plans (probably temporarily) and dinged their Pairwise ranking. Minnesota currently sits firmly on the tourney bubble at No. 17 in the Pairwise -- the arcane ranking system that mimics the NCAA's tournament selection process -- and while a sweep in their regular season finale against Wisconsin would deliver them that conference title, it isn't likely to move the national needle. Although an at-large bid is still a possibility, the Gophers will likely need to win the Big Ten Tournament in order to advance.
Zach Parise, Wild forward
It's been a rough few weeks for the Wild's highest-paid forward, who has scored just once in his last 18 games. Parise hasn't suffered a drought this severe since his rookie season, and has just one point in his last three games.
