Fowler to undergo surgery on herniated disc

TUCSON, Ariz. – University of Arizona senior pitcher Kenzie Fowler will undergo back surgery on Oct. 4 in Los Angeles to mend a herniated disc in her back, softball coach Mike Candrea said.

Fowler has suffered back pain and leg and foot numbness for the past nine months as a result of a herniated disc. The injury occurred in January, and extensive rehabilitation offered only temporary relief, Candrea said.

Doctors will perform a microscopic lumbar discectomy next week, and she is expected to make a full recovery in time for the 2013 season.
