Four Women of Troy Grab Pac-10 Honors
March 8, 2011
The USC women's basketball team has secured high honors for several Trojans on this year's All-Pac-10 honor roll. Led by Ashley Corral and Briana Gilbreath's back-to-back spots on the All-Pac-10 Team, USC's Jacki Gemelos picks up All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention, and Cassie Harberts earns a spot on the All-Freshman Team. Gilbreath also makes a return trip to the Pac-10 All-Defensive Team.
Junior guard Briana Gilbreath has made herself at home on the All-Pac-10 awards list since coming to Troy and earning selection as 2009 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year. She was an All-Pac-10 Third Team pick that year, and went on to the All-Pac-10 Team as a sophomore, when she also was named Pac-10 Co-Defensive Player of the Year.
Now a junior and leading the Trojans in scoring, rebounds, steals and blocks, Gilbreath is a lock on the 2011 All-Pac-10 Team for the second year in a row as well as the Pac-10 All-Defensive Team for the third straight season. Twice named Pac-10 Player of the Week this season, Gilbreath has climbed up in the USC history books to currently rank No. 16 all-time in career scoring with 1,173 career points and No. 7 all-time in career blocks with 119. Charged with shutting down opponents' top players, her defensive prowess is well known, as she is second in the conference in steals with 2.6 per game, third in blocks (1.5 bpg) and fifth in defensive rebounds (5.1 pg). Offensively, she has scored in double digits in 23 games and has seven double-doubles to date.
Gilbreath's fellow team captain Ashley Corral also joined the 1,000-point club this season -- currently standing at No. 19 all-time with 1,084 career points -- and has taken over as USC's career leader in 3-pointers, currently holding 200 threes to date, to go along with a spot at No. 9 all-time in career assists. She picked up Pac-10 All-Freshman Honorable Mention back in 2009, and jumped up to 2010 All-Pac-10 Team honors as a sophomore.
Now a junior leading the Trojans in assists and second in scoring thanks to 19 double-digit outings, Corral also was a Pac-10 Player of the Week this season, and is a easy pick for 2011 All-Pac-10 Team honors.
Playing in her first full season as a Trojan after three and a half seasons on the sidelines with knee injuries, guard Jacki Gemelos has earned herself a nod with 2011 All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention. The flashy Gemelos is the team's third leading scorer and 3-point shooter. She's hit double digits in 18 games for the Trojans, including a season-best 27 points with five 3-pointers drained in USC's win at Fresno State. This is the first Pac-10 honor of her career.
The only USC player to have started every game this season, freshman Cassie Harberts has made her presence known in the conference and is a rightful owner to a spot on the 2011 Pac-10 All-Freshman Team. The forward has tallied two double-doubles and has scored double-digits in 18 games for the Women of Troy. She's fourth on the team in scoring with 9.3 points per game and third in rebounding with 5.7 rpg.
