Four CIF Southern Section alums taken in MLB Draft first round; Royce Lewis, Hunter Greene go 1-2

It was a CIF Southern Section showcase at the 2017 MLB Draft's first day.

Royce Lewis of JSerra and Hunter Greene out of Notre Dame High School got the day started going 1-2 in the first round as teams opted for high school talent with day's three picks.

Leading up to the draft, scouts had flipped between Greene and Lewis as the two best high school players on the board with many leaning towards Greene because of his ability to play shortstop and touch triple digits on the mound. However, the Twins shocked quite a few by snapping up Lewis with the No. 1 pick before the Cincinnati Reds pounced on Greene at No. 2.

In addition to Lewis and Greene, former Valencia High School standout Keston Hiura was selected out of UC Irvine by the Milwaukee Bucks at No. 9, before the fourth CIF-SS alum of the night Nick Pratto of Huntington Beach High School was at No. 14 by the Kansas City Royals.
