Former North Stars coach Sonmor dies at 86

Former Minnesota North Stars coach Glen Sonmor, Minnesota Gophers men's hockey radio announcer and Minnesota Wild scout Glen Sonmor died Monday at the age of 86 according to a statement released by the Wild.

The North Stars' coach from 1978-1986, Sonmor led Minnesota to its first Stanley Cup Finals appearance, a five-game loss to the New York Islanders in 1981, following a run to the Campbell Conference Finals in 1980.

Sonmor's NHL career was brief, spanning just 28 games for the New York Rangers from 1953-1955, but he would go on to a long career as a coach, including appearances at the University of Minnesota, Ohio State, as well as the World Hockey Association's Minnesota Fighting Saints and the Birmingham Bulls.
