Former 5-star receiver Jones leaving Texas for Arizona
TUCSON, Ariz. -- It looks as if Texas -- as in burnt orange and Hook 'em Horns -- is a new pipeline to the University of Arizona.
On Tuesday afternoon, wide receiver Cayleb Jones, a five-star high school recruit, announced he will transfer to Arizona to join Rich Rodriguez and former UT reserve quarterback Connor Brewer.
"We've really enjoyed being a part of the Texas program, but we've talked about the situation as a family, and we think it's best for Cayleb to get a fresh start and transfer to another school," Cayleb's father, Robert Jones, said in a statement to the Austin American Statesman. The elder Jones is a former Dallas Cowboys player.
Jones caught two passes for 35 yards last season as a freshman for UT and was expected to contend for a starting role this season. But, he was suspended for Texas' season opener against New Mexico State after being charged with aggravated assault in connection to an incident involving a Texas tennis player. According to the paper, Jones hit Joseph Swaysland and broke his jaw in a dispute over a female. The charge, a felony, was later reduced to a misdemeanor.
Cayleb Jones, on Tuesday, posted information about the transfer on Twitter to the "Longhorn Nation" in which he thanked Brown and "everyone involved and affiliated with the University of Texas for everything they have done" for him and his family.
He announced he was seeking a transfer three weeks ago and just two weeks after Brewer, a Scottsdale native, said he would transfer. Brewer chose Arizona late last month.
Jones, who is listed at 6-foot-2, 185 pounds, was rated the third best wide receiver recruit in the nation by Scout.com in 2012 out of Austin High School in Texas.
Scout.com's Scott Kennedy said: "Jones is as fearless a wide receiver going over the middle as any in the country. He has sticky hands and is capable of making highlight reel catches on balls thrown high. He elevates well and is spectacular at making the tough catch in traffic. "
Jones is the third prominent transfer in the last few months. Davonte' Neal transferred from Notre Dame (there's been no decision made on whether he can play this season or not), Brewer and now Jones.
Former wide receiver Dan Buckner, now in the Arizona Cardinals training camp, transferred to UA from Texas in 2009 and played two seasons for the Wildcats.
