Drew Brees not sweating contract talks, plans to retire with Saints
Drew Brees and New Orleans have been working on a contract extension for quite a while, but Brees doesn’t seem to be sweating it even though the Saints quarterback is entering the final year of his current deal at age 37.
Brees, who has said he won’t continue to negotiate after the season begins, played into the final year of his contract with the Saints back in 2011 and ended up setting an NFL record for passing yards in a season. Regardless of how long it takes to sign, he’s not planning on leaving New Orleans at any point.
"I’ve been through that a few times, so you know that (the contract extension) will happen when it’s supposed to happen, he told USA Today on Tuesday. There’s so much that goes into an offseason — you’re signing free agents, you’re signing rookies, you’re going through the draft process. Now as we get ready for training camp, I obviously, I see myself in New Orleans for the rest of my career."
Brees may be getting older, but he’s led the NFL in passing yards in four of the past five years and has shown few signs of slowing down. He plans to make good on whatever contract he signs.
"I feel like I’ve got quite a few good years left," Brees said. "I got one year left on the contract, but whether you have a one-year contract or a five-year contract, you’ve still got to prove it every year ... even if you’re locked into a long-term deal, they can get rid of you at any time, so that’s my mindset."
