Dozier hits leadoff homer; Twins win 13-2

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Brian Dozier hit a leadoff drive in the first for his first spring homer, and the Minnesota Twins collected 16 hits in a 13-2 victory over a split-squad of Baltimore Orioles on Saturday.

Twins right-hander Ervin Santana allowed two hits and two unearned runs in two innings. He struck out two and walked two.

Eddie Rosario and Juan Centeno also homered for Minnesota, which broke it open with eight runs in the sixth. Eduardo Nunez went 2 for 2 and drove in a run.

Ryan Flaherty had two hits and drove in a run for Baltimore. Tyler Wilson gave up two runs, one earned, and two hits in two innings.

The Orioles finished with five errors and six hits.

"We didn't field it very well, we didn't pitch it very well and we didn't hit it very well," manager Buck Showalter said. "It's always disappointing when you don't play well."

STARTING TIME

Twins: Santana, a candidate to start on opening day, threw seven pitches in the first inning. He faced eight batters in the second after Dozier committed an error on the leadoff man.

"I kind of put the whammy on him," manager Paul Molitor said. "I said, `Neil (pitching coach Neil Allen), if he throws seven pitches in the second, is he going back out there for the third?' So, that wasn't too intelligent on my part."

Santana wasn't bothered by the workload.

"That's good," he said. "Good workout."

Orioles: RHP Tyler Wilson gave up two runs, one earned, and two hits in two innings.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Orioles: Utilityman Jimmy Paredes is out indefinitely after he bruised his left wrist diving for a ball in Thursday's game against the Rays. An MRI determined there was no soft tissue damage. ... LHP Brian Matusz was diagnosed with a lower back strain. Showalter said Matusz probably would be placed on the disabled list if the injury had happened during the regular season.

Twins: Nunez left in the seventh inning, limping after beating out an infield hit. Molitor said Nunez is good and is expected to play on Sunday.

PROSPECTING

Right-hander Jose Berrios followed Santana with 1 1/3 scoreless innings. The prospect allowed one hit, walked three and struck out one in his spring debut.

After loading the bases in the third, Berrios struck out Dariel Alvarez on a 94 mph fastball to end the inning.

"I'm sure he's trying to make an impression," Molitor said. "He handled not being called up and all those things very well. He knows we're looking out for his best interest."

SPRING STRUGGLES

OF Hyun soon Kim, whom the Orioles signed in December out of Korea for two years and $7 million, is 0 for 13 this spring.

"I think he's one of those guys that as soon as something falls in for him, he will (be OK)," Showalter said. "He's been running around. We'll see where it takes us. We're going to keep running him out there and see what we've got. Every day you get a little better feel for it."

UP NEXT

Orioles: RHP Mike Wright is scheduled to start Sunday against Boston, which is expected to send RHP Clay Buchholz to the mound.

Twins: RHP Kyle Gibson is slated to start Sunday's game against Tampa Bay in Port Charlotte. RHP Jake Odorizzi is expected to pitch for the Rays.
