Davis Webb putting Texas Tech's quarterback issues in the past

LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech's quarterback situation in 2013 was as wild as the West Texas wind.

But the dust has finally settled in Lubbock.

Two former Red Raiders battling for the starting job last year have moved on. Baker Mayfield was taking snaps at Oklahoma's spring game on Saturday, and Michael Brewer is now at Virginia Tech.

After an impressive Holiday Bowl performance, sophomore Davis Webb continues to prove the team's quarterback issues are in the past.

He was flawless in Tech's spring game on Saturday, throwing for 354 yards and four touchdowns in the offense's 37-30 win over the defense.

"The whole spring and all the scrimmages, I don't think he turned it over one time," Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury said. "That's how he's been in practice."

Last spring, Brewer was expected to be the 2013 starter before suffering a summer back injury. That forced Kingsbury to rely on two true freshman quarterbacks. Mayfield got the nod for the opener against SMU, but Webb finished the season as the Holiday Bowl offensive MVP. He started six games and passed for 2,718 yards and 20 touchdowns.

"He's night and day from where he was last year at this time and being a vocal leader," Kingsbury said. "I've been really impressed with him."

The Red Raiders' biggest offensive weapon the last two years, tight end Jace Amaro, is headed to the NFL. But Webb believes his receiving corp might be better in 2014.

"This is the fastest receiving group I've ever known since I've ever watched Texas Tech football," Webb said. "It's fun to see after you throw to watch them run with the ball."

Jakeem Grant, arguably the fastest player for Tech, had five receptions for 105 yards on Saturday, including a 75-yard score from Webb in the first quarter.

"Davis Webb today is a totally new Davis Webb," Grant said. "Davis Webb never gets complacent; he's taking leadership."

There's no quarterback controversy this year, but it could get interesting again in the near future.

Kingsbury's prize 2015 recruit, Jarrett Stidham, was in attendance at Jones AT&T Stadium on Saturday.

Stidham is the nation's top-ranked dual-threat quarterback by numerous recruiting websites.

But for now, Webb is no doubt the leader of the Red Raiders.

"There's no reason why you shouldn't expect this team to be one of the best teams that ever played at Texas Tech," he said.
