D-backs prospect rankings: There's more to like than Dansby Swanson
Baseball's hot stove season has gotten off to a rather tepid start, but there is plenty of prospect banter to share with Diamondbacks fans.
Baseball America and mlb.com both released their "top prospect" lists for the D-backs in the past week -- following previous lists from Fangraphs and Inside the 'Zona.
It comes as no surprise that shortstop Dansby Swanson is the unanimous choice as the D-backs' top prospect, and you'll find many common names and rankings on all four lists. But, as is also to be expected, particularly with young, toolsy players in the very early stages of their pro career, there are some significant differences of opinion.
Two of note are middle infielders Isan Diaz and Domingo Leyba. Diaz ranks as high as sixth on Inside the Zona's list and is nowhere to be found in MLB's top 30. Leyba, the other player acquired with the Robbie Ray in the Didi Gregorius deal, is No. 8 on MLB's list, but lesser appreciated by the other evaluators.
Here's a chart comparing the four lists, and links to where you can read the evaluations:
NOTES: Baseball America released only its top 10 prospects. ... Daniel Palka, since traded to the Minnesota Twins, was ranked 17th by Inside the 'Zona and 25th by Fangraphs. He was removed from those rankings, and the players below him adjusted accordingly. . . . Pitcher Archie Bradley was not included in the Inside the 'Zona list.
