D-backs demote Addison Reed to Triple-A, activate Enrique Burgos
PHOENIX -- Two days after saying the bullpen might be too crowded to add a healthy Enrique Burgos, the Diamondbacks found a way, optioning former closer Addison Reed to Triple-A Reno.
Reed was 2-2 with three saves and a 5.92 ERA, having been supplanted as the closer by first Burgos and then Brad Ziegler in the middle of May. Burgos was placed on the disabled list with shoulder soreness on May 26 after pitching in seven of the previous 11 games.
Reed, who had tried who tweak his mechanics twice this season, was booed lustily after his last appearance, when he gave up four runs on four hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning in Saturday's 8-1 loss to San Diego.
His splits are dramatic -- he is 0-2 with a 10.22 ERA in 14 appearances at Chase Field and 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA in 11 road games.
Burgos recorded his first two career saves in back-to-back games May 18-19 in Miami but did not have another save opportunity in the next week before feeling shoulder soreness.
He was 0-2 with a 4.61 ERA in 13 games, with 25 strikeouts in 13 2-3 innings with the D-backs after being recalled when Archie Bradley was placed on the disabled list April 19. Burgos made his third rehab appearance at Double-A Mobile on Sunday, striking out two and walking one in a scoreless inning.
