Cup of Coffee preview: Brad Ziegler
Fans have a chance to find out how Brad Ziegler's quirky delivery came about as he comes out of the bullpen to grab a latte on this week's episode of "Cup of Coffee with Steve Berthiaume."
The Diamondbacks right-hander sat down with play-by-play announcer Steve Berthiaume at Chloe's Corner Cityscape and talked about how he transformed into a submarine pitcher, the story of how he met his wife and the moment he knew he had made it as a major leaguer.
FOX Sports Arizona will debut the episode on Sundday, June 29 at 4 p.m. after the D-backs take on the San Diego Padres. It will replay at 10 p.m.
This episode, produced by Josh Kelman, is the fourth installment of the series this year, coming off of the well-received episode with Bronson Arroyo.
"When one of the last shows was being promoted, Brad tweeted at Bethiaume, 'I like coffee,' and we knew we had to have this guy," Kelman said. "He definitely stands out, he's opinionated and has that delivery. Most relievers usually don't grab your attention, but he has carved out a niche."
Ziegler showcased his fan-friendly personality and talked about his potential broadcasting career after he is done playing baseball.
"I don't shy away from the public because I remember what it's like to be a fan," Ziegler says.
Ziegler did not know how long he would last as a submarine pitcher, but his career has turned out to be one for the record books.
The submariner started his career off with a bang and did not allow a run in his first 39 innings pitched, setting a major-league record.
Ziegler joined the Diamondbacks in 2011 in a trade with the A's and has been a vital piece to the bullpen since.
