Coyotes sign forward Moss away from Flames

In the opening hours of the NHL free-agency period on Sunday, the Coyotes signed former Flames forward David Moss to a two-year contract. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The 30-year-old Moss had two goals, seven assists and 12 penalty minutes
in 32 games with Calgary in an injury-shortened 2011-12 season. The 6-foot-4, 207-pounder had spent his entire career with the
Flames organization, recording 61 goals and 63 assists in 317
regular-season games. He posted career highs in goals (20), assists (19)
and points (39) during the 2008-09 season.
 
“David, a former 20-goal scorer, is a big, versatile player who will provide secondary scoring and backup depth at our center position,” Coyotes general manager Don Maloney said in announcing the signing. "Our associate coach, Jim Playfair, coached David in Calgary and believes he will be an excellent addition for us. We are pleased to add him to our roster."
 
The Coyotes' depth at forward is uncertain due to the unrestricted-free-agent status of wingers Shane Doan, Ray Whitney and Taylor Pyatt and center Daymond Langkow. While Doan is expected to return, Maloney said Thursday that he doesn’t expect to have responses from Whitney, Pyatt or Langkow until they have tested the market.

Also on Sunday, the Coyotes signed goaltender Chad Johnson to a one-year, two-way contract.
 
The 26-year-old Johnson posted a record of 22-18-6 with a 2.49 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage last year with the Connecticut Whale, the New York Rangers' American Hockey League affiliate. He has played six career games with the Rangers and played 136 games in the AHL after entering the league as a fifth-round pick of the Penguins in the 2006 draft.
