Coyotes call up Rundblad, emergency goalie

The Coyotes recalled goaltender Chad Johnson and defenseman David Rundblad from the team's AHL affiliate in Portland on Thursday.

Johnson was recalled on an emergency basis after Coyotes goalie Mike Smith suffered an apparent injury early in Wednesday night's win over the Blue Jackets. His status has not yet been determined, but coach Dave Tippett said after the game that Jason LaBarbera will start Thursday night in San Jose against the Sharks.

The 26-year-old Johnson, a fifth-round pick in 2006, has appeared in 24 games with the Pirates this season, posting a 14-8-0 record with a 2.80 goals-against average and .912 save percentage.

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Rundblad has played one game for the Coyotes this season. He also has appeared in 32 games with Portland in 2012-13, recording six goals and 17 assists to lead all Pirates defensemen in points. The 22-year-old Rundblad, a 2009 first-round pick who was acquired by the Coyotes last year from the Senators in the Kyle Turris trade, has been selected to represent Portland in the AHL All-Star Game this season.
