Cowboys ready if QB Brandon Weeden is needed

IRVING, Texas - Tony Romo continues to do what he can to return to the playing field this week. But Cowboys backup Brandon Weeden is doing the same - and his preparation includes actually practicing.

"My job as a quarterback is to keep the train on the track," Weeden said. "To keep it rolling."

The Cowboys at 6-2 are rolling, though they might have to do so Sunday against visiting Arizona with Weeden, the former first-round pick of the Browns, under center.

The Cowboys see Weeden as the most prepared backup QB in the NFL because of "Romo Wednesdays," when the starter usually takes the midweek day off.

"Those are my game days," Weeden put in a lot of extra work in training told FOX Sports Southwest.

Romo continues to undergo therapy for what the Cowboys have called a "back contusion." But Dallas is certainly coming to grips with the idea that the "train" might require another engineer this Sunday.

Said tight end Jason Witten:  "He's very mature. He has a good grasp of this offense. He should have a lot of confidence from what he did on Monday (when he subbed for Romo in a loss to Washington). That stage wasn't too big. We have a lot of confidence in him."
