Cowboys QB Brandon Weeden has Jerry Jones' excitement
IRVING, Texas -- Cowboys owner Jerry Jones may have "felt lower than a cripple cricket's ass" Sunday night after losing franchise quarterback Tony Romo to a fracture left clavicle for eight weeks, but on Thursday Jones expressed excitement in seeing what backup Brandon Weeden has to offer.
"The reason Weeden has my excitement is because they better back off or he can hit it, and he can make the throw," Jones said. "That's one of the reasons I feel good about him."
Last week in Philadelphia, Weeden filed in for Romo and completed all seven of his pass attempts for 73 yards and a touchdown, a 42-yard slant to receiver Terrance Williams to insure a Cowboys victory and the franchise's 25th 2-0 start.
Weeden said Wednesday he doesn't plan to dial back his game and be a game manager. Rather, he plans to be aggressive.
"I'm not going to be tentative," said Weeden. "I'm an aggressive guy by nature. I always have been, maybe sometimes, truth will tell it, to a fault. But you got to smart at the same time. You have to go out and execute plays."
The Cowboys owner, president, and general manager foresees the Cowboys rushing attack, which has been in the bottom-14 of the league with less than 200 total rushing yards through the first two weeks of the regular season, coming alive with Weeden's success.
"If he keeps them backed off, then we've got to emphasize that we're going to run the ball.
"We have to work hard to have a game, have a game that lets us dwell on the running game. We haven't had that. Now, maybe that's because we didn't get the running game going to begin with, but we all know how that works."
