Cincinnati holds on to beat IPFW 65-59

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Yancy Gates and Sean Kilpatrick scored 13 points each, leading Cincinnati to a 65-59 win over IPFW on Saturday.

Rashad Bishop scored 11 points and Dion Dixon added 10 for Cincinnati (2-0). IPFW (1-2) switched to a zone in the second half and shut down the Bearcats, who made only six field goals and scored 20 points in the second half.

Cincinnati led 9-2 early, but the Mastodons twice cut the lead to one before Kilpatrick came off the bench and guided a 14-5 Cincinnati run. Kilpatrick hit a 3-pointer, got a rebound, had an assist, scored a 2-point basket and made a free throw during a 4:07 stretch that gave Cincinnati a 34-24 lead.

Gates scored 11 points in the first half as the Bearcats built a 45-32 halftime lead. Kilpatrick scored seven points in the second half as the Mastodons threatened but got no closer than four points.

Frank Gaines led IPFW with 16 points.
