Chivas USA rolls 2-0 in first scrimmage

February 1, 2011

TEMPLETON, Calif. - Chivas USA played its first preseason scrimmage of 2011 on Tuesday morning, beating the Premier Development League's Fresno Fuego 2-0, with goals coming from forwards Alan Gordon and Victor Estupinan. The match was held just outside of Paso Robles Calif., where Chivas USA has been training for the past nine days. The Red-and-White fielded two separate teams in each half, with goalkeepers Sergio Arias and Kevin Guppy combining for the shutout.

Chivas USA dominated the early portions of the match, holding a large majority of possession throughout the first half. Midfielder Gerson Mayen was very active in the first 30 minutes, with a few shots on goal and several dangerous free-kicks. Chivas USA opened the scoring in the 31st minute when Alan Gordon headed in a cross from fellow striker Tristan Bowen.

Chivas USA again controlled the tempo and possession in the second half, but the Fuego had a few dangerous counter attacks, calling second half goalkeeper Guppy into action to make some good saves. Victor Estupinan, drafted 14th overall in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft, entered the match in the 63rd minute and paired well with Alejandro Moreno to lead the Chivas USA attack. Estupinan finished off the match's scoring when he headed home a cross from defender Carlos Borja in the 80th minute.

The Red-and-White returned to Los Angeles after the match and will resume training at The Home Depot Center on Friday morning. The club's next preseason scrimmage is on Monday, February 7 against the San Jose Earthquakes, also at The Home Depot Center.
