CCL Roundup: Whitecaps, Sounders draw; Alvarado scores in Club América romp
Vancouver Whitecaps 1 -- Seattle Sounders 1
The two Cascadia rivals opened the Group of Death with a draw at B.C. Place. Both teams made several changes in the wake of the Whitecaps’ 3-0 win in league play on Saturday. Those alterations inevitably took a toll on the first-half fare, but the Whitecaps perked up the proceedings with the opener just after the hour. Tim Parker met Pedro Morales’ whipped corner with a tidy flick to send the Whitecaps in front in their first Champions League fixture. Lamar Neagle pegged Vancouver back and lifted his side to a much-needed result when he collected Andy Rose’s cross and thrashed inside the near post after 72 minutes. Group F play continues when Seattle hosts Honduran giants Olimpia at CenturyLink Field on Aug. 19.
Club América 4 -- Motagua 0
Arabe Unido 3 -- Montego Bay United 0
The home side eased to the points in Panama City to emerge as the most likely threat to D.C. United in Group H. Jose Gonzalez exposed the soft core of the Jamaican defense to grab the lead just before the half hour. Renan Addles doubled the advantage a minute before the break after his bouncing free kick somehow eluded Jacomeno Barrett. Enrico Small rounded off the win in the final quarter of an hour with his unmarked header at the far post. The victory serves as ideal preparation for the Panamanian outfit ahead of D.C. United’s visit on Aug. 19.
