Cardinals recall Navy vet Harris on Independence Day; Greg Garcia sent down
The St. Louis Cardinals announced prior to today's Independence Day game with the San Diego Padres that they have recalled right-handed pitcher and U.S. Navy Lieutenant Mitch Harris from Memphis and optioned infielder Greg Garcia to the Triple A club.
Harris, 29, appeared in 16 games for the Cardinals earlier this season (1-1, 3.63 ERA), becoming the first member of the U.S. Naval Academy to appear in the majors since Nemo Gaines of the Washington Senators in 1921.
Harris has appeared in five games at Memphis since his option June 18, allowing three runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings pitched.
