Cardinals recall Mayers, option Gant to Memphis
A day after earning his first win as a Cardinal and second as a major leaguer, right-hander John Gant is headed back to Triple-A Memphis. Taking his roster spot is right-hander Mike Mayers, who was recalled from the Redbirds.
Gant was recalled from Memphis on Thursday and pitched the final three innings of the Cardinals' 4-3, 13-inning win over the Mets. It was nine up, nine down for Gant, who had previously won a game for the Braves in 2016.
Mayers, 26, allowed one run over five innings in three appearances with the Cardinals earlier this month. He was optioned to Memphis on April 15 and appeared in three games for the Redbirds, earning two saves and pitching five scoreless innings.
