The St. Louis Cardinals shared the above photo of Busch Stadium at sunset on Tuesday night, around the same time Game 6 of the World Series began on the other side of Missouri, in honor of their 22-year-old outfielder who was killed in a car crash in the Dominican Republic on Sunday.
On Monday, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny released a heartbreaking statement on Taveras's death, and on Tuesday, friends, family, Cardinals teammates and others mourned his passing at a service in the Dominican Republic.
Also on Tuesday night, Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Yordano Ventura, a friend of Taveras from the minor leagues and fellow a Dominican native, inscribed the outfielder's minor-league number on his hat in addition to "RIP."
Ventura threw seven scoreless innings in the Royals' Game 6 victory that he dedicated to Taveras. "If [Oscar] was still here, I would for sure be talking to him," Ventura said, "and Oscar would be very happy for me and very proud."
