Brewers' Segura reinstated from DL, Kintzler designated for assignment

The Milwaukee Brewers reinstated shortstop Jean Segura from the disabled list prior to Friday night's series opener with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

To clear room on the roster, the Brewers designated right-hander Brandon Kintzler for assignment.

Segura suffered a fractured right little finger May 12 sliding headfirst into third base after hitting a triple. He sat out the following day before being placed on the disabled list May 14.

After expressing his disappointment with the club's decision to place him on the disabled list, Segura ended up missing 14 games with the injury.

Although Luis Sardinas has filled in admirably at shortstop, Brewers manager Craig Counsell made it clear Segura would regain his starting job whenever he was ready to return. The 25-year-old is hitting .262 with two home runs, 12 RBI and six stolen bases in 33 games.

Kintzler has a 6.43 ERA in seven innings for the Brewers this season. The right-hander was designated for assignment by Milwaukee on April 21 before his contract was purchased from Triple-A Colorado Springs on May 7.

The Brewers had been carrying nine relievers since recalling right-hander David Goforth to replace injured starter Wily Peralta on Monday.

Milwaukee also has outrighted right-hander Rob Wooten to Colorado Springs, removing him from the 40-man roster. Wooten is currently pitching for the Sky Sox after being optioned to Triple-A on May 7.

The Brewers now have two open spots on their 40-man roster, one of which will be used to recall a starting pitcher to fill the void left by Peralta's injury. According to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, Double-A right-hander Tyler Wagner will be summoned to start Sunday against the Diamondbacks.
