Brewers recall top prospects Hader, Phillips from Triple-A

Two pieces from the trade which sent Carlos Gomez and Mike Fiers to the Houston Astros have been called up by the Milwaukee Brewers.

Left-hander Josh Hader, who is set to make his major-league debut, and outfielder Brett Phillips were summoned by the Brewers on Friday from Triple-A Colorado Springs. To make room for the pair, pitcher Paolo Espino, who started Thursday's game vs. San Francisco, was sent to the Sky Sox while third baseman Travis Shaw was placed on the family medical emergency list.

Hader had dominated in Double-A with the Brewers in 2015, after coming over from the Astros organization, and in 2016, but he has posted inflated ERA since being moved to Colorado Springs last year. In 2017, is 3-4 with a 5.37 ERA and 1.54 WHIP with the Sky Sox. Hader had been limited to two innings in each of his last two starts as the Brewers looked to limit his innings this season. MLB.com lists Hader as the No. 3 prospect for Milwaukee and the top pitcher.

Phillips was with Milwaukee earlier this week but was sent down when Shaw returned from the paternity list. He was 1 for 3 in two appearances for the Brewers.

Espino lasted four innings allowing three runs in Thursday's loss to the Giants.

A third member of that deal which brought Hader and Phillips to the Brewers' organization is already with Milwaukee -- outfielder Domingo Santana. Pitcher Adrian Houser was also acquired in that deal. He is rehabbing from Tommy John surgery which he had last year.
