Brewers' pitching staff showing improvement since All-Star break

The Milwaukee Brewers are 13-13 since the All-Star break, after starting the season 38-49

The team's pitching staff has played a key role in that improvement, posting a 3.30 ERA in the 26 games since the break. That marks one of the biggest staffwide improvements in the major leagues.

Milwaukee's starting staff has a 3.54 ERA over the stretch, allowing two or fewer runs in 18 of the 26 games. Its relief pitchers have been even better, posting a 2.87 ERA over 84 2/3 innings since July 14.

The entire staff has been especially effective at Miller Park over the stretch, posting a 2.37 ERA over 129 innings and helping the team to a 9-5 home record. Friday's starting pitcher, Jimmy Nelson, has contributed to that home success, allowing just two earned runs in each of his two home starts since the All-Star break.

Nelson's home success dates back even further, as he has allowed two or fewer earned runs in nine straight starts at Miller Park. That's tied for the longest such streak in Brewers franchise history.

The Brewers' hitters have contributed to the recent home success, too, averaging 4.8 runs in the 14 home games since the All-Star break. The team has hit 22 home runs at Miller Park over that stretch, led by five from Kirk Nieuwenhuis and four from Chris Carter.

Carter hit a two-run homer in the first inning of Milwaukee's 11-3 win over the Atlanta Braves on Thursday, his 20th home run at Miller Park on the season. The 29-year-old leads the major leagues with 20 home runs at home this season. He tied the Brewers' franchise record for home runs at home with his latest home run.
