Brewers' Gomez accepts suspension

Brewers OF Carlos Gomez, who wasn't expected to play on Wednesday due to back tightness, decided to accept a three-game suspension from an April brawl with the Pirates. Gomez, who had been appealing the suspension, will miss the Brewers' Thursday and Friday games, and probably return to the lineup on Saturday. I guess if he was going to be out for a game or two anyway, taking the punishment now was the smart thing.

On to the rest of the news:

Rays 2B Ben Zobrist left Tuesday's game after dislocating his left thumb on a head-first slide, and is probably headed for the DL.

CC Sabathia's knee is worse than originally thought, but he still could come off the DL after the 15-day minimum. "Degenerative" is a scary-sounding word, isn't it?

Streaming starters: Brandon McCarthy's strong Wednesday outing raised our record to 27-17 for the season; I think he might be worth a pickup in all formats. Today's pick is Phil Hughes (owned in 10.9 percent of FOXSports.com leagues), while Friday's selection is our pal Jose Quintana (13.7 percent owned) at Houston.

FYI, the Padres and Reds will play a doubleheader today with a 12:35 p.m. ET start, and there are a total of four afternoon games, so set your lineups early.

Mets SP Dillon Gee is on the DL with a strained right lat muscle, and is expected to miss two starts.

Joe Smith got the Angels' save last night, and it sounds like he's in a timeshare with Ernesto Frieri.

The Yankees-Mets game tonight will feature a Chase Whitley-Jacob deGrom pitching matchup. Subway Series fever - catch it!

Speaking of the Yankees ... TANAKA!!! Seriously, one reader sent me a tweet last night saying he wanted to trade for Tanaka, and this couldn't be more of a "buy high" situation. Dealing for him now would cost an arm, a leg and possibly some major organs.

Don't go crazy about this yet, but Orioles' manager Buck Showalter suggested Wednesday that Zach Britton could replace Tommy Hunter in the closer role.

Rays SP Alex Cobb (oblique) had a solid Wednesday bullpen session, and is still targeting a May 22 return from the DL.

The Blue Jays placed C Dioner Navarro on the bereavement list, and he should be back in a few days. Look for Josh Thole to get a few starts while Navarro is gone.

Hey, have you noticed that Astros' rookie OF George Springer (15.3 percent owned) has three homers in his last seven games?

Indians OF Michael Brantley is day to day with back tightness; don't expect to see him in the lineup tonight.

The Twins activated OF Oswaldo Arcia (wrist) from the DL and sent him to Triple A. He should be back in Minnesota soon, since not a lot of guys there can hit the ball over the fence.

The Astros say that slugging 1B Jonathan Singleton (12 HR, 1.030 OPS at Triple A) is "on deck" for a promotion, whatever that means.

So now Martin Perez (possible TJ surgery) and Matt Harrison (back) might be done for the season? The Rangers should just have an open pitching tryout at this point.

The Marlins have signed free-agent lefty Randy Wolf. Zzz ...

Reds SP Tony Cingrani (shoulder) could come off the DL as soon as Sunday.

The Pirates will probably decide today if OF Starling Marte (back) is headed for the DL.

See? We told you that 2B Kolten Wong would be back with the Cardinals soon.

See you back here tomorrow morning.
