Blues re-sign Berglund, Shattenkirk

ST. LOUIS -- Kevin Shattenkirk and Patrik Berglund will be back with the St. Louis Blues next season.

The team announced Wednesday that Shattenkirk, a defenseman, and Berglund, a center, have finalized contracts for the upcoming season. Both were scheduled to become restricted free agents on July 5.

Shattenkirk, 24, signed a four-year extension. He will receive $17 million, according a St. Louis Post-Dispatch report.  Berglund, 25, signed a one year extension earlier in the day. He will receive a reported $3.25 million.

Shattenkirk ranked second among Blues defensemen in points (23) this past season. He has accumulated 109 points (23 goals and 86 assists) along with 116 penalty minutes in a 201-game career that started after he was drafted 14th by Colorado in 2007.

"Kevin has been one of our most consistent performers over the last three years," Blues General Manager Doug Armstrong said in a press release. "In each of his first three seasons, Kevin has finished in the Top 25 in scoring by a defenseman and we expect him to continue to be among the NHL leaders."

Berglund tied for fourth on the team with 17 goals last season. His 23 percent success rate led the NHL in overall shooting percentage. This is the third contract Berglund has had with the Blues since he signed with the team in 2007. He was the 25th pick in 2006.

St. Louis now has four potential restricted free agents remaining: Chris Stewart, Alex Pietrangelo, Kris Russell and Jake Allen.

Starting July 5, teams can extend offers to these players.The Blues, however, would get the opportunity to match.
