Blues activate Sanford from IR, assign him to San Antonio

ST. LOUIS -- Zach Sanford is taking a big step toward a return to the St. Louis Blues -- by taking a step to the American Hockey League.

The Blues activated Sanford from injured reserve Thursday and immediately assigned him to the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL.

Sanford, 23, has been sidelined all season after undergoing surgery Sept. 19 to repair a dislocated left shoulder. This assignment gives him a chance to work back to NHL game shape after missing the entire preseason. He has been skating with the Blues the last couple of weeks but needs some game action to prepare for a return to the Blues.



The forward was acquired from Washington in the Kevin Shattenkirk trade a year ago. He played 13 regular-season games with the Blues last season, posting five points (two goals, three assists). He has eight points (four goals, four assists) in 39 career NHL games.
