Blind Luck takes Vanity Handicap

Blind Luck rallied from last at the top of the stretch Saturday to win the $250,000 Vanity Handicap at Hollywood Park.

Returning to California after a win in the La Troienne on May 6 at Churchill Downs, Blind Luck sat sixth in the field of six fillies and mares before roaring back in the stretch and holding off another rally from favorite Switch to win by a half-length, covering 1-1/8 miles in 1 minute, 50.89 seconds.

Jockey Garrett Gomez said he was confident the filly could beat Switch despite losing to her in their only previous meeting, the 2010 Hollywood Oaks.

''I didn't have much ground to make up,'' Gomez said. ''I felt if we turned for home together or me giving her two or three lengths, I could still run her down. She loves to run in the lane and she has a heck of a turn of foot.''

A 4-year-old filly trained and partly owned by Jerry Hollendorfer, the winner paid $5.60.

Miss Match was third.

Hollendorfer said he may take Blind Luck to the $750,000 Delaware Handicap on July 16, or keep her in Southern California and point toward the $300,000 Clement L. Hirsch on Aug. 6 at Del Mar.

Earlier in the $86,100 Manhattan Beach Stakes, long shot Sugarinthemorning held off a rally from Gomez and heavy favorite Mizdirection to win the turf sprint for 3-year-old fillies.

Ridden by Patrick Valenzuela for trainer Ron McAnally, Sugarinthemorning ran six furlongs in 1:09.18 and paid $25.80.
