BC-Sports Preview Digest
Some of the sports stories The Associated Press is covering Wednesday. A full Sports Digest will be sent by about 3 p.m. All times EDT:
- BUDAPEST, Hungary - Katie Ledecky faces perhaps the stiffest test in her bid for a record-tying six gold medals at the world championships when she competes in the 200-meter freestyle final against Australia's Emma McKeon, world-record holder Federica Pellegrini of Italy and home-country favorite Katinka Hosszu. Finals begin 11:30 a.m.
- SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Clint Dempsey could have a chance at a 58th goal to break Landon Donovan's U.S. record when the Americans go for their sixth Gold Cup title and first since 2013 when they face surprising Jamaica at Levi's Stadium. Game starts 9:30 p.m.
- Novak Djokovic will sit out the rest of this season because of an injured right elbow, meaning he will miss the U.S. Open and end his streak of participating in 51 consecutive Grand Slam tournaments.
- INDEPENDENCE, Ohio - Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert addresses All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving's request to be traded and Cleveland's other issues during what has been a chaotic summer for the Eastern Conference champions. News conference starts 4 p.m.
- ARLINGTON, Texas - Texas right-hander Yu Darvish (6-8) makes his last start before Monday's non-waiver trading deadline among growing speculation that the Rangers could trade the potential free agent. Darvish faces Jose Urena (8-4) and the Miami Marlins. Game starts 8:05 p.m.
- OXNARD, Calif. - Ezekiel Elliott isn't talking to reporters at training camp because of several lingering issues off the field. But the Dallas running back, last year's NFL rushing leader as a rookie, is still hamming it up with adoring fans.
- SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Cam Newton will throw at practice for the first time since offseason surgery as the Panthers open training camp practice with a night practice.
- LOS ANGELES - Washington beat Colorado last December in a Pac-12 title game that nobody saw coming. The Huskies and Buffaloes head into their encore seasons knowing they'll stay on top of their reloaded conference only if their revivals are for real.
- BURBANK, Calif. - If Daniel Cormier wasn't Jon Jones' bitter enemy, the UFC light heavyweight champion probably could give sound advice to Jones, the troubled former champ. Instead, the steady Cormier realizes he needs a victory over his self-sabotaging archrival at Saturday's UFC 214 to validate his own title reign.
- GENEVA - The Olympic family of sports is in its own period of turmoil one year after a troubled Rio de Janeiro Games. A recent slew of negative headlines for sport's world governing bodies have tarnished soccer's FIFA, swimming's FINA, boxing's AIBA, and track and field's IAAF.
