Ayumu Goromaru joins three-time European champion Toulon

TOULON, France (AP) Japanese fullback Ayumu Goromaru has signed a one-year deal with French club Toulon with an option for an additional season.

The 30-year-old Goromaru, who impressed at last year's World Cup but struggled to adapt to Super Rugby at Queensland Reds, spent most of his career with Japanese club Yamaha Jubilo.

Goromaru has made 56 international appearances and scored 708 points with Japan.

Toulon president Mourad Boudjellal says ''he is joining us to become the first Japanese player to win a big title in Europe and to work with Jonny Wilkinson, who will get him ready for the next World Cup in Japan.''

Toulon has won the European Cup three times from 2013-15.
