Atkins out with knee injury
As if the Bengals didn't have enough troubles with injuries, All-Pro defensive tackle Geno Atkins left Thursday night's game at Miami with a right knee injury. Atkins went to the ground on a 3-yard run by Dolphins running back Lamar Miller with 4:17 left in the first half.
Atkins walked off the field gingerly with the aid of teammates. He was taken from the sidelines to the locker room on a cart. FOX19 sports director Joe Danneman tweeted a picture of Atkins on crutches with his right knee heavily iced.
The Bengals trailed the Dolphins 10-3 at halftime.
The Bengals have already lost starting cornerback Leon Hall (Achilles) and backup safety Taylor Mays (shoulder) for the season in the last two games. Linebacker Rey Maualuga (knee/concussion) was inactive for this game is out indefinitely. The Bengals were also without linebacker Michael Boley (hamstring), who replaced Maualuga last Sunday against the New York Jets, and left tackle Andrew Whitworth (knee).
Linebacker James Harrison had his left thumb looked at prior to halftime but was expected to return to play in the second half.
The Bengals have seven players on the injured reserve list this season, all from the defensive side of the ball.
**POST-GAME UPDATE**
Head coach Marvin Lewis confirmed after the Bengals' 22-20 defeat in overtime that Atkins has an ACL injury but he could not comment on how extensive the injury is or if it is indeed season-ending.
"They feel like he has an ACL injury. I don't know. Until they get home...," said Lewis. "I don't know if he did an MRI here or not. But has an ACL injury."
