ASU softball extends win streak to 13 games

TEMPE, Ariz. -- The No. 5 Arizona State softball team extended its win streak to 13 games Friday night with back-to-back wins over North Dakota State (10-2 in five innings) and Boise State (4-0).

Elizabeth Caporuscio hit her sixth home run of the season and went 3 for 6 overall in the two games. Bailey Wigness scored three runs for ASU and Katelyn Boyd scored two for the Sun Devils, who improved to 17-2 with the victories.

The Devils capitalized on some Bison confusion to get on the scoreboard first, as miscommunication in the outfield led to an Annie Lockwood single that scored Wigness and made it 1-0. A wild pitch brought Boyd home shortly thereafter, extending ASU's first-inning lead to 2-0.

North Dakota State got on the board in the top of the third, as Brandi Enriquez came home on a Katie Tamayo single. But ASU answered in the bottom of the frame, as Elizabeth Caporuscio launched her sixth home run of the season to make it 3-1. Back-to-back doubles from Haro and Wigness plated three more runs for the Devils before Wigness came home via an error, increasing the lead to 7-1.

In the fourth inning, a sacrifice fly from Haley Steele scored Caporuscio to make it 8-1, and ASU then tallied two bases-loaded walks to extend the margin to 10-1. The Bison were able to score one run at the top of the fifth on an RBI single from Brea Konz to plate Randi Parks, bringing the final score to 10-2.

Hillary Bach earned the win to improve to 7-0 on the year with a 0.50 ERA. Whitney Johnson took the loss for North Dakota State, which fell to 10-7 on the year.

Thanks to impressive pitching performances on both sides, the scoreboard didn’t see a mark until the fourth inning, when Sam Parlich hit a sacrifice fly to score Caporuscio and give ASU the lead.

The Devils added to their total up in the fifth when Boyd dribbled a single up the middle to score Kayla Ketchum and make it 2-0.

ASU sealed the win in the top of the seventh, as Lockwood hit a drive off the left-field wall to score Wigness and Boyd came home on a fielder’s choice by Caporuscio to push the lead to 4-0.

That was more than enough for Dallas Escobedo, who threw 131 pitches through seven innings of work to earn the win and improve to 6-1. Aubray Zell took the loss and fell to 6-5 for the Broncos, who are now 10-7 on the year.
