Arizona, UNLV in talks to move game to Glendale

Greg Byrne wasn't kidding.

A week after the Arizona athletic director said during the athletic department's "Road Tour" stop at Chase Field that he would like to schedule more football games in the Phoenix market, Byrne confirmed a report from the Las Vegas Review-Journal that UA and UNLV are in talks to move this year's game from Las Vegas to University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale.

Arizona previously announced that a game against BYU -- the first in a three-game series -- will be played at University of Phoenix Stadium in 2016.

As part of his weekly Wildcat Wednesday newsletter, Byrne wrote the following:

"You know about our recent announcement concerning our football game in Phoenix in 2016 versus BYU, and the emphasis we have made on growing our presence in Maricopa County. A few months ago, current UNLV and former Arizona A.D., Jim Livengood reached out to me to see if we would be willing to move our road game against UNLV this year from Las Vegas to Glendale to play at the University of Phoenix Stadium,  home of the Arizona Cardinals.

"We haven’t signed a contract yet but we wanted you to know that it is a good possibility that it will happen. If it does we will count on all of our fans throughout the state to come to Glendale to give another reminder that Arizona is Wildcat Country."

The Arizona-UNLV game is currently scheduled for Sept. 7 at 7:30 p.m. It is unclear if the date and time would remain the same if the game were to be moved to Glendale, but the stadium should have flexibility that week since the Cardinals do not play at home that Sunday; they are scheduled to be in St. Louis to play the Rams.
