Arizona gets commitment from 5-star guard

Alpharetta, Ga., guard Kobi Simmons, rated as five-star recruit, announced Saturday that he would attend and play basketball for the Arizona Wildcats.

Simmons announced his decision during ESPN's telecast of the Hoophall Classic game in Springfield, Mass.

"I'm going to Arizona and really my relationship with Miller and his staff just grew and grew," Simmons later told Scout.com. "We have an indescribable relationship. I just feel more comfortable with that stuff and I can trust them the most."

Scout.com ranks the 6-foot-5 Simmons as the No. 18 recruit in the Class of 2016. He is regarded as a combo guard who can play the point or off the ball. He joins 7-foot forward Lauri Markkanen of Finland in Arizona's 2016 class.

Simmons picked Arizona over Kentucky and Ohio State even though he has not visited the campus.

Arizona remains in the mix for 6-7 wing Josh Jackson, rated as the nation's No. 3 recruit who has reportedly narrowed his choices to Arizona and Michigan State, and forward Harry Froling of Australia.

Scout.com's scouting report of Simmons follows:

 "He's skilled, handles the ball well, has good vision and can pass. He's a good driver and is equipped with floaters with either hand when he drives. He's also comfortable shooting pull-ups from mid-range and is an improving long-range shooter. He has a low release and consistency from three is an area for improvement. Simmons also has potential as a defender."

After announcing his decision on ESPN while wearing a suit, Simmons addressed the media in Wildcat gear.
