Angels place Cowgill on disabled list with wrist injury
The Angels are still trying to get their offense untracked, and for at least the next two weeks, they'll have to do it without Collin Cowgill.
Cowgiill was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Angels, retroactive to Tuesday, with a sprained right wrist. Angels manager Mike Scioscia didn't have a timetable for Cowgill's return.
Cowgill first felt something in the wrist that wasn't right on Sunday in Boston.
"When he was taking batting practice, he felt a little twinge in his top hand, which was odd," Scioscia said. "It's usually the bottom hand. It was on his top hand. He took a couple swings and it went away. He got back and took a couple of swings and said it felt like his hand was on fire.
"He didn't feel he was able to play on Sunday. He was evaluated back here and it looked like it was inflammation but didn't look like anything that wasn't going to be manageable. He got a second opinion and further tests and it confirmed what we already knew, that it is going to take more time.
Cowgill was batting .180 with 1 home run and 2 RBIs in 35 games. The Angels offense has been slow to find a groove this season. The Angels are batting .234 as a team, tied for second-worst in baseball.
For Cowgill, he'll have to wait for the swelling in his wrist to go down for the Angels to have a clearer idea for his return.
"It's significant enough to put him on the disabled list," Scioscia said. "It's going to take at least a couple of weeks. The important thing is to calm it down. It's been evaluated. The medical staff and doctors have an idea of how to treat it. It's going to take a little bit of time. He's not going to do too much this week as far as picking up a bat. Hopefully, this thing will get healthy enough. We'll get an idea after this week of how long its going to be."
