Angels' Featherston feels 'terrible' for hitting Mariners' Cano in head (VIDEO)

The Angels scored early but not necessarily often Saturday to hang on to a 4-2 win over the Seattle Mariners.

Looking at Taylor Featherston after the game, however, you wouldn't be able to tell.

The Angels' glum infielder stood in front of his locker following the win with an incredibly sad look on his face and a feeling of regret.

As the Angels prepared to start the top of the 7th inning, Featherston made a "bad throw" from shortstop that sailed over Albert Pujols' head and into the Mariners dugout, where it smacked Cano right on the head, leaving a large bump.

"Honestly, it was just an accident," Featherston said after the game. "I feel terrible about it.

"It just got away. It just slipped. It's never happened to me before. I can only hope and pray that it never happens again....Right when I saw it I just cringed. You never want to see anything like that. You never want to inflict anything on anybody else."

Cano left the game with dizziness from the incident. He was given testing under Major League Baseball's concussion protocol. Tests were negative but he was diagnosed with a contusion and is listed as day-to-day.

The start of the inning was stopped momentarily as the Mariners training staff attended to Cano. The Mariners second baseman was soon escorted to the Seattle clubhouse.

Immediately following the game, Featherston called the Mariners' star to express his sincere apologies.

"He handled it very well," Featherston said of Cano. "He had nice things to say. He said 'I hope everything goes well with you.' Right back at him. I've been watching him for years. Tremendous player. I have the utmost respect for him."

Following the game, Cano told The News Tribune that he hopes to play in Sunday's rubber match.

"Thank God I didn't lose consciousness," he told The Tacoma News Tribune. "It just hurts right on that spot. Other than that, everything is good."

Cano was 0-for-3 when he left the game. In addition to the call made by Featherston, Cano also received a call from Pujols following the game.
