All-Star weekend: Clippers' Redick knocked out of 3-point competition in first round

J.J. Redick didn't win the NBA All-Star's 3-point shooting contest, but he was thrilled to be there. 

Redick, making his first career appearance in an All-Star activity, had a first-round score of 17 that wasn't enough to move on to the next round. He didn't get credit for several shots he made because his foot was on the arch. And there was an interesting review in the 3-point contest, but it didn't go his way. 

It would've been hard to beat Stephen Curry anyway.

Curry won the 3-point shooting contest and made 13 consecutive 3-pointers in the final round. His Golden State Warriors teammate, Klay Thompson, finished second .

Before Redick left for the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., Redick picked himself as the favorite to win.

"You always bet on yourself, right? So I had a friend take some money. Just kidding," Redick said on Wednesday. "(I have) 6-to-1 odds. I have the second-worst odds, I think. I'll take those odds. It's an incredible field. I've always wanted to be in it. Nothing against past participants, but there was a few years where the actual shooting talent was a little thin."

Redick was thrilled to participate in the 3-point shooting contest.

"I don't know if I've ever been in the conversation, but I'm just excited and honored to be a part of All-Star weekend," Redick said when he learned he made the field. 

Redick has made 43.6 percent of his 3-pointers this season. He was battling back spasms the two previous weeks but returned to play in Monday's win at Dallas and Wednesday's win over Houston before the All-Star Game. 

Sitting courtside to watch the 3-point contest, among celebrities like Rihanna and Nicki Minaj, was Clippers guard Chris Paul, and his son, Chris. The Pauls cheered on Redick. 

Blake Griffin made the All-Star team but had surgery Monday to remove a staph infection in his elbow, so he had to give up his spot.

Paul is a reserve for the West in Sunday's All-Star Game.
