Albert Pujols was this close to passing Mark McGwire on the all-time HR list
On Saturday night, Angels first baseman Albert Pujols smashed his 583rd career home run to bring him into a tie with slugger and former teammate Mark McGwire for 10th on the all-time home run list. Less than 24 hours later, Pujols was mere inches from passing 'Big Mac.'
Up 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Pujols lifted a 3-2 pitch to straight away center. The moonshot looked destined for Cooperstown but Yankees centerfielder Jacoby Ellsbury had 'robbery' on his mind.
Leaping at just the right moment, Ellsbury just managed to extended far enough to reach the would-be historic homer and deny Pujols of No. 584 and the 10th spot all to himself on the home run list.
