A brutal takedown of the sports cliche 'You couldn't write a script like this'
You couldn't write a better indictment of the tired sports commentator cliche, "You couldn't write a script like this..."
For a recent example of the tired "script" phrase, let's cut to MLB Commissioner Bud Selig's remarks on Derek Jeter's final Yankee stadium at-bat, a ninth-inning walkoff single that required a David Robertson blown save to occur.
"I've seen emotion in my lifetime," Selig said. "But, boy, that was as good as anything I've ever seen. And to think, when he came up, I said to myself, 'It can't happen this way. You couldn't write a script. Nobody would believe it."
Yes, the final Jeter at-bat was remarkable, but hasn't Selig seen Bernie Mac's "Mr. 3000?" Now that was a crazy script.
