3 in the Kee: Cole Aldrich can't catch a break
KANSAS CITY, Mo. --The weird and wonderful from the weekend that was ...
:03 ... Poor Cole Aldrich. The ex-Kansas big man can't seem to catch a break, can he? First, freshman Andrew Wiggins announced his presence to Kansas fans by laying down a thunderous dunk last Wednesday over the 6-foot-11 Aldrich during a public scrimmage at a Jayhawk summer camp.
That image hasn't been posterized for a profit -- yet. But it has now apparently been slapped onto a souvenir trading card, which was available early Monday morning at eBay.com under this listing:
"2012 FanDesign ANDREW WIGGINS RC /100 Kansas Jayhawks hand #'d"
The listing was posted by a seller out of Eudora, Kan., known as "curlyandlulu," who asked for a starting bid of $20.00 and a "Buy It Now" price of $30.00. A picture of the card is to the right. The seller's description starts like this:
"This auction is for a ANDREW WIGGINS rookie card. This is a 2012 FanDesign rookie card hand #'d /100 of the phenom. This card is also hand initialed by the designer.
"This is a creative take on a retro custom card, professionally designed, glossy front, matte back. Unlicensed.
"This auction is for the card listed in the title ONLY. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask. PLEASE SEE PHOTO. Ignore any glares caused by my flash."
Or the bruises to Aldrich's ego. Better hurry, though: The auction is slated to end Tuesday. Unless, of course, the KU licensing police get there first.
:02.5 ... More eBay fun. As of early Monday morning, the highest price for a ball signed only by former KU star Ben McLemore, a likely top five pick in Thursday's NBA Draft, was listed as $189.99 or best offer. For Wiggins? It was $349.99 or best offer.
:02 ... Whether jumping as a collegian or a professional, Erik Kynard doesn't mess around. The former Kansas State track star and Olympic silver medalist in the high jump soared -- literally -- in his pro debut Sunday. Kynard took home the high jump crown at the USA Track and Field Championships with a leap of 2.28 meters (7-5 3/4). It was the first USATF title for the Ohio native, who is now headed to the IAAF World Championships in Moscow in August. Kynard, who recently signed a four-year contract with Nike, was the first K-State jumper to win at the USATF Championships since Nathan Leeper in 2002. His next stop: Europe, including an IAAF Diamond League event June 30 in Birmingham, England.
:01.5 ... In what's expected to be her final outing as a Jayhawk, Kansas triple-jumper Andrea Guebelle won the women's triple jump Thursday at the USATF championships and hit a wind-aided 14.03 meters (46-0 1/2) on her fourth attempt. If the senior from Washington state meets the triple-jump B-standard -- a mark of 14.20 meters (46-05) -- before July 20, she'll join Kynard at Worlds in August.
:01 ... Meanwhile, it's a South Florida reunion for two former Wildcats, as former K-State forward Adrian Diaz is transferring to Florida International, according to an ESPN.com report. The 6-foot-10 Diaz, who averaged 2.7 points and 7.7 minutes per game last winter in Manhattan, is a Miami native. Ex-Wildcat point guard Angel Rodriguez announced in May that he was transferring from K-State to Miami (Fla.); the Hurricanes' campus is approximately nine miles from FIU.
