Man dies after collapsing during race

A 37-year-old man died Sunday after collapsing while taking part in a marathon event in Little Rock, Ark.

Michael Kelly, of Little Rock, collapsed about 11:30 a.m. local time at the 11-mile mark during the 13.1-mile half marathon, being held as part of the Little Rock Marathon festival, KARK-TV reported.

He was taken to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, where he was pronounced dead.

His cause of death was unknown and an autopsy will be performed Monday.

It is the second time a runner has died during the annual event. The last time was in 2008.

Little Rock Marathon director Gina Pharis said in a statement, "We are deeply saddened and extend our sympathy in a serious way to the family. We've been through this before and it's not easy."
