Will Johan Franzen be ready for the start of camp?

Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland is hopeful that his power forward, Johan Franzen, can return in time for the start of the season.

"My expectations and hopes are he's going to be cleared when he takes his physical at camp," Holland told Mlive.com. "Ultimately, it's in the hands of (his doctor)."

Franzen last appeared for the Detroit Red Wings on Jan. 6, 2015. He only appeared in 33 games last year, and only played in 54 games in the prior season. Franzen was hit hard on a blindspot hit from the Edmonton Oilers' Rob Klinkhammer. Franzen was ruled out with a concussion, and it unfortunately wasn't his first.

"Obviously, there's a history of concussions," Holland said. "I can't read the future. I expect he'll take his physical and pass it and resume his career. As he skates and trains every day, if he has no setbacks -- I don't know why he would -- I'm expecting his body is going to tell him."

Franzen was experiencing scary concussion-like symptoms following his latest setback.

At 35, Franzen has just one full NHL season to his name. In 600 career games, he's recorded 187 goals and 369 points. Assuming he is healthy at the start of the season, Franzen will likely be reduced to a third-line role on the team. His primary team mates last season were, however, Henrik Zetterberg and Gustav Nyquist, according to Hockey Analysis.

Franzen is also signed to the Red Wings until 2020.

Despite a relatively gloom outlook just a few months ago, Holland remains optimistic after speaking with the forward, and believes in a return.

"Johan told me he's gotten better over the course of the summer," Holland said. "He's pushed himself hard to test it. So far, so good."
